What he suggested…

  1. Ensure the email has a clear objective. All your content should then support this objective. In this case it is to introduce teachers to podcasts and show how they can help them with their work. Secondly, it is to get teachers to subscribe to the Amazing Grades service.
  2. The link at the top is the personal login for the reader. Make this a benefit by giving it a title and highlighting it at the top of the email.
  3. Add a headline which highlights the main benefit of reading the newsletter. This could be ‘New celebrity podcasts help improve student revision’. Supporting introductory content should back this up with further benefits/info.
  4. ‘What is a podcast?’ is an important but secondary question. Move it to the side column and put most of the answer on the website to encourage click through.
  5. Add a one sentence overview of the podcast content and its benefit. Link to more detail on the website. Insert ‘Radio 2 DJ’ before Mark Radcliffe to increase his celebrity value (and just in case people haven’t heard of him!)
  6. Ensure all buttons and links are individually clickable.
  7. Redesign the newsletter to make it more in tune with the website. Plan the content in a modular fashion, utilising the box format from the website, to make it easier to scan.
  8. Rename the ‘Podcast Archive’ the ‘Top 5 Podcasts’ to make it feel more timely and exciting. Only include the title to encourage readers to click through for further information and to download.
  9. Make the ‘Subscribe now’ box jump out at the reader. Include a link ‘Why should I subscribe?’ to a page on the website highlighting the benefits of the service.
  10. Add links to content on the website wherever possible/appropriate.
