A statement from the company reads: “We listened. We learned. We reinvented Hotmail from the ground up. Forget everything you thought you knew about Hotmail. Just don’t forget this date.”

According to, the announcement represents one of the first major innovations in webmail for years. The three leading online email providers Gmail, Hotmail and Yahoo! Mail have kept their platforms relatively unchanged since Gmail came onto the scene in 2004.
